Helem - Lebanese Protection for LGBT

Meem Around the World
September 17, 2007

Lebanon is a country with historically high emigration rates, which are mostly the result of war or harsh economical situations. Emigration is particularly high in the lesbian community because many women in their mid-twenties, in addition to political, economical, and academic reasons, decide to seek life in more tolerant societies. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but  in any case, it's an important and present issue still in our lesbian community in Lebanon today.

Meem around the world

Above is a map of our Meem representatives around the world. If you are a Lebanese lesbian living anywhere in the globe and want to help us, visit us, or just say hello, please do email us on coordinator@meemgroup.org. We'll put you in touch with the Meem member closest to you, or you can become a representative yourself. It is important to Meem that we re-connect all the lesbians who have left Lebanon in the past to the community we have now. If you're planning to visit Lebanon any time soon, let us know. We have a designated hospitality committee who will show you around all the lesbian-friendly spots in Beirut, bring you to our meetings, and introduce you to the members.

If you identify as a Lebanese lesbian and are excited about helping Meem here in Lebanon, you CAN help with a number of things, no matter how far away or disconnected you think you are. You will feel right at home, promise.

If, however, you want to email or visit us for the malignant purpose of letting us know how retarded Lebanese society is compared to your new tolerant and gay-friendly country using phrases that start with "3inna bi amerka" or "chez nous à paris" or "how can you still live in Beirut??" then don't bother. Frankly we don't give a crap.

► Does Meem Help Lesbians Emigrate?

No, because it breaks our hearts. Well, maybe we do help a little.

We are hoping to create a second option to emigration, an option where lesbians can live happily in their home towns. One grows out of Lebanon very quickly; it's a tiny country, but at least we want women to make their emigration decisions soundly, not because they want to run away, and not because they are disillusioned with the West as a perfect world. It's always hard to come to terms with leaving Lebanon (queue touchy Fairuz music). Plus, if everybody leaves, who is going to make a change?

Still many women make up their minds about leaving, especially those in couples or wanting children, and we still help out by putting them in contact with individuals or organizations in their target countries. We also compile embassy information and advice from experiences of immigrant lesbians before us. We have never dealt with an asylum case, but when a woman becomes in need of one, we are fully prepared to support her.
