Meem Lobbies for Lesbian Rights at the MENA Women's Rights Conference
It was a historical achievement for lesbian rights on April 22, 2008, when over 120 of the biggest names in women's rights organizations applauded and voiced full support for a speech given by Meem's Coordinator calling for the inclusion of sexual rights - and lesbian rights in specific - on the agendas of women's rights NGOs in the Arab World. The conference took place in Morocco and was organized by the Association for Women in Development (AWID) and the Global Fund for Women. "Feminism is not selective," Meem Coordinator said. "Sexuality is a feminist issue, and we cannot continue to exclude women  who are not straight from our so-called feminist movements."

Sexual Health Workshop
The last Saturdays of our months are dedicated to workshops on different subjects. In April we had a fantastic workshop on sexual health given by Raja Farah, a sexual health expert. Our members openly asked questions about sex, learned about sexually transmitted diseases particular to lesbians, and ways of practicing safe sex. Raja also runs a Sexual Health Lebanon group on Facebook. Join it!

Human Rights Watch Representative
Visits Meem
Meem had the pleasure of inviting Mr. Nadim Houry from the Human Rights Watch office in Lebanon to visit the Womyn's House and learn more about Meem's activities. Mr. Houry met with some Meem members and discussed how the rights of lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer women are basic human rights. "I am very impressed with Meem's work," Mr. Houry said after the visit, "and HRW is ready to help should any Lebanese lesbian be in need of our assistance."

Meem Member Visits WFCE in Armenia
A Meemian visited Armenia in April and met up with the Armenian civil rights group “We For Civil Equality" (WFCE) in the capital Yerevan. In addition to taking part in their weekly activities and staff and volunteer meetings, our member represented Meem and our work in Lebanon in hopes of a future partnership between both groups. WFCE was formed by a number of Armenian activists who were looking for friendship, support, and a sense of belonging in the LGBT community. Read more.
