Bekhsoos Makes Its First Appearance in Arab Media!
Bekhsoos has made its first media appearance in Menassat.com, an online Arab news portal You can read the fantastic article in English and Arabic. After the exposure we got from those articles, Bekhsoos il Homophobia, our first issue was discussed on many blogs and news websites such as Caledoniyya, Muslimah Media Watch, and Jiha5 Saudi Magazine.
 

 

Gender & Sexuality Training Camp
Twenty one Meem members participated in a fantastic 2-day training camp on gender and sexuality on September 20-21, 2008. The program included lectures on gender theory, sexual diversities, movement-building, and feminism. The highlight of the training was the session on sexual rights and its multi-layered intersections. We will hereon be referring to ourselves as non-conforming sexual beings :)
 

FrontLine Training of Trainers Workshop
A Meem member participated in the recent Training of Trainers organized by FrontLine Human Rights Defenders in Dublin, Ireland. The training focused on helping social activists optimize their personal, organizational, and information security.

Lesbian Harassment
September broke the record for number of harassment cases reported to Meem by its members. These included problem cases with family members, employers, teachers, police, and random people on the street. Meem is documenting all these cases of human rights violations and has issued an internal security warning to its members to be careful.

Garage Sale
The Womyn House hosted a one-month garage sale in September. Members bought and sold things like DVDs, books, CDs, picture frames, decorative items, computer gadgets, and other items at very cheap prices. The garage sale raised over $100.
 

Book Club Reads Suheir Hammad's Poetry
Our book club this month featured a rich selection of poetry readings, the coolest of which was the spoken word poetry of Suheir Hammad's ZaatarDiva collection. Book clubbers read, listened to, and discussed different poems of resistance, identity politics, and resilience.

News Bits

► We would like to thank our generous donors this month: the organizers of BiBi in San Francisco, Bassam from Helem San Francisco, and Norma from London. Thank you very much!

► A group of Meems has been holding weekly Photography workshops on identity. The participants are learning to work their cameras, as well as exploring the different layers of their personal identities through photography.

► The Activist Development workshop series featured an interactive session on blogging. Our head Meem blogger spoke about the how's and why's of creating a blog, posting, commenting, adding gadgets, and using the online tool for social change.

► We'd like to thank raynbow.org, the Lebanese nonprofit store for their continuous support of Meem. Their Media Monitor is the best online reference for media articles on Arab homosexuality since 2005.
